The Help by Kathryn Stockett is about an unlikely hero. Skeeter, a white woman of high society in Jackson, Mississippi, is against the segregation of black people in the South. She sets out to expose the injustices against the entrenched culture of her friends, family, and society. She doesn't swoop in like a super hero and save the day, but she does set in motion changing the sometimes violent culture of Jackson by writing a book about the stories of black maids in her community. Giving black women the permission to talk without inhibition is heroic in itself, but the book she writes changes the lives of black people in the South for the better. -Mrs. Craig

Monument 14, Sky on Fire is about your classic hero. The protagonist, Dean, is a 15 year old boy who is in the middle of a chemical warfare agent spill. The chemical compoun affects people differently based on blood type. A person with A type blood develops blood blisters and bleeds to death. A person with blood type AB becomes paranoid, a person with type B can't reproduce, and O types become raving mosters. Dean, fittingly, is an O type. he manages to get into a mega store with 2 other O types and two AB type twins. they fend off all kinds of attackers, breaches, and ex military cadets and end up being saved at the last minute from a thermo-baric blast.-Wamesy

When first reading the book Divergent, by Veronica Roth, it was difficult to imagine the main character, Tris (Beatrice) Prior, as a hero. After joining her on her journey of leaving her safe home to a different dangerous faction (community if you will), I find qualities in her that prove her hidden heroism. For example, after her friend failed to complete the high orders of Eric, a cruel Dauntless leader, he is forced to stand in front of a target while an instructor throws knives next to his head. Tris bravely stands up for him and takes his place even after having a piece of her ear cut off. In addition to this, towards the end of the book, she finds that one two of the factions have waged war on each other. The Euridite faction "brain washed" Tris's faction but, being Divergent, Tris is able to snap out of the simulation. She risks her life to destroy the simulation and save thousands of people. -Hannah

The House of Hades by Rick Riordan is about the adventures of Percy Jackson and his teammates/friends. Percy, the protagonist, is definitely a hero. He isn't the classic hero that you would see in movies, but he is certainly not an unexpected hero either. Percy is a demigod - half human and half god- and is saving the world from Gaea, the goddess of the earth. He sets of to fight Gaea and experiences many hardships. Even though he is a hero because he is saving the world, he also is a hero to his demigod friends, who are trying to defeat Gaea along with him. For example, Percy and his girlfriend Annabeth are in Tartarus. He fights off monsters for her and he says words of encouragement and helps her get through the hardships they experience. Percy risks his life multiple times to help along the way of defeating Gaea. There are many obstacles and challenges that Percy needs to face to be able to protect the world from the wrath of the goddess Gaea. It takes a real hero to even have the nerve to face this challenge, and just as much of a hero to encourage his friend along the way.

The Son of Neptune, by Rick Riordan, has not just one, but three different heroes- Percy, Hazel, and Frank. I believe that heroes are defined by their actions, and that is certainly the case in this mythology-focused book. In the previous books, Percy is known for being a big hero, having defeated a Titan army who were attacking the mortals. In the Son of Neptune, he proves that he is still a hero when he fights off a vicious army of ghosts to protect Frank. Frank proves himself as a hero when he risks his life to free Death. To do so, he burns the stick that holds his life, because it is the only source of heat that can burn through the ice chains that bind Death. Freed from his chains, Death stops evil souls coming back to life. Hazel is also a hero, and she shows it when she kills a giant whose sole purpose is to destroy Neptune and his sons, including Percy. Percy, Hazel, and Frank are all heroes because of the actions that they took in risking themselves to help others.

The House of Hades by Rick Riordan has many heroes. At first, it is hard to distinguish one main character, because there is not one. Each character is a main character or hero in their own way. In The House of Hades, 7 demi-gods, half human half god, are working together to defeat Gaea, the Earth Goddess. The seven demi-gods are constantly facing challenges where they have to decide what to do and how they can save the most people. Even though they are only teenagers, they are capable of more than most adults. However, I think one stand out hero was Leo. He can't fly or create a tsunami, he's not big or strong, but he is able to build a ship to take them on their quest. Without Leo constantly arming the ship from monster attacks, and creating new gadgets to help bring them through the Ancient World, the demi-gods would be lost. For example, when two gnomes cam and stole all their things, it was Leo who was able to outsmart them and create a bomb out of everyday items to catch the gnomes and retrieve there things. Even though there are many heroes in my book, I believe Leo is the unsung hero of the story.

Insurgent by Veronica Roth is a story about a unique and unexpected hero. Tris has spent her whole life living with in a community where you are quiet, conservative, and most importantly selfless. With little training from her new Dauntless faction, Tris is in a pre-war that needs to be stopped. A hero is selfless and generous because they risk their lives to save others. Tris shows that she is a hero by risking her life for the better good of her society. For example, at one point in the book Tris stabs an evil Dauntless leader, Eric, to save a group of people whose lives were in jeopardy. This was a dangerous and heroic action because there were many armed soldiers sided with Eric willing to shoot any trouble makers. Tris is also heroic in the way that she always helps others no matter what condition she is in. An example of this was when Tris’s side of the war was attacked and over 60 people had toxic needles implanted in their skin. Tris, even though she was wounded and tired, took needles out of every person until she was near collapse. The fearless and selfless parts of Tris result in action worthy of being called heroic.

Reynie doesn't have the body of a hero but his ability to overcome obstacles makes him as much of a hero as anyone.

The Giver by Lois Lowry is about a very unique town. Each citizen has a certain job assigned to them at age 12. Jonas gets assigned the most honorable job of all, the receiver of memory. Jonas is not only a hero because he is honored, but he has the responsibilities to take on this difficult task. He has to hold all of the memories of the past that his town doesn't experience. For example, he has to take on the pain of broken bones, sunburn, and war. Jonas's heroic characteristics show that he is a hero to his town, willing to go through all of the pain of the past so there is one only person, knowing what happened before them. -Avery H #6

Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix is about Harry Potter. He is a hero because he "killed" a dark wizard named Voldemort when Voldemort tried to kill him and the spell rebounded. Actually Voldemort didn't die, he came back to life. In this book Voldemort is trying to control Harry's mind. Harry sees through Voldemort's eyes in his dreams. For example he had a dream where his friend's dad was getting attacked and it actually happened. If he had not told anyone he saw his friend's dad get attacked his friend's dad would've died. Sense he made good decisions he saved his friend's dad's life and those good decisions make him a hero - Ford # 10!!!!!

Percy Jackson appears the most unlikely hero. The 12 year old boy looks like a regular child but when ancient methodical creatures attempt to kill him he discovers his god like powers. Percy and his two friends must go on a quest to retrieve Zeus's master bolt to save earth from the release of the Titans and complete world destruction. Percy must find the stolen property in 10 days. In order to do so he must cross the U.S. landing in great cities like Denver and Las Vegas and meet the god of the dead while fighting of the most deadly monsters on the face of the earth. Percy Jackson will also uncover the truth of his father Poseidon on his journey to save the gods and humanity.

Lemony Snicket wrote a book about himself as a ten year old hero in the book "Who Could This Be at This Hour?" Lemony Snicket goes on a journey to a city that was once by the sea called Stain'd-by-the-sea. This town once made ink from the octopuses in the sea, but now it is just a own with a few open shops. Lemony Snicket is there to solve a few mysteries. Every time he finds himself almost solving a mystery, he just receives a new one, sometimes in the most interesting manner. He is a thoughtful, smart, and polite young boy, but his chaperon, S. Thedora Markenson, a cruel old lady who "helps" him solve the mysteries. Snicket meets new friends that have many other problems, too. One of his friend's father got kidnapped. He is willing to help his friends as long as they help them in return... by helping him solve the other mysteries.

The Mark of Athena, by one of my favorite authors, Rick Riordan, is not about one hero, or two, but seven. In a previous book, a prophecy was made.
The prophecy referred to the seven heroes of this book. Percy Jackson, Annabeth Chase, Piper McLean, Jason Grace, Frank Zhang, Hazel Levesque, and Leo Valdez are seven demigods from two different camps, the Greek Camp Half-Blood, and the Roman Camp Jupiter. In The Mark of Athena, these heroes must bring the two warring camps together. The demigods head to Rome on their flying ship, the Argo II. Rome is a dangerous place for the heroes, because the land of Greece and Rome is where the "mythological" culture originated, so there are many more harsh creatures to fend off. Annabeth is a daughter of Athena, who just so happens to be part of yet another prophecy. This prophecy states that "Wisdom's daughter" must go alone to seek a lost statue of Athena. The statue belonged to the Greeks, and was taken and hidden. It is believed that if it is found, and returned by a Roman, peace will be restored between the two camps. Annabeth proves to be one of the somewhat more heroic characters, because in order to achieve her goal, she must face her great fear of spiders, alone. She is able to stay calm and resourceful to outsmart the cursed spider, Arachne, and acquire the statue of Athena. Overall, the Seven manage to selflessly risk their lives (they seem to do this a lot) in order to save the world from being over-run by Gaea (the "not-so-nice" Mother Earth) and her evil titan children.

His dad was an ex-Harvard football star, a special advisor for the President of the United States, an orphan as a boy. His dads plane crashed at a mysterious time and everything Zach thought he new about his dad went in a nose dive down with it. He unlocked many secrets about himself. Naturally as the protagonist, Zach developed super powers and became a super hero. He didn't wear his underwear on the outside of his clothes though. He is a hero that tries to fit in during everyday life and face what normal kids try to cope with: a bully. Lucky for him, his bully, Spence Warren was the least of his worries after scaring away a mugger in Central Park at midnight and taking on three more of the same type of people single handedly. After his third attempt against a giant, Zach got defeated and sent to the hospital. He had a bad concusion and broken ribs. After about three days of recovering, an old man named Mr. Herbert came in to his hospital room and told him that it was all a test. Mr. Herbert was the old man Zach met at his dad's plane wreck site and the same man who helped Zach discover his super powers. The antagonists are the Bads. They are all the bad people in the world all fighting to get super powers like Zach's and his dad's. Zach struggles to make it through each day as a normal kid and now as a super hero.

Unwind is a book about a future world where kids between the ages of 13-18 can be "unwound" if an adult does not think they will benefit society. When a kid is "unwound" they are basically taken apart and their body parts are sold to others in need of them. They serve as real-life prosthetics. The main character rebels against the system and saves many lives of future unwinds. The main character is a hero because a hero has to do something to change the world in order to be considered a hero. He changed the unwind system and saved people's lives, therefore, he is a hero.

WARNING:HOH SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!House of Hades by Rick Riordan has many heroes. Infact, the series is Heroes of Olympus. In this novel, each of the seven demigods posses an power, along with multiple hero qualities. Percy, the son of the Sea god, had the ability to control water with his will. Some heroic qualities he possesses are loyalty and bravery. In this book, he has just fallen into tartarus for his girlfriend, proving his loyalty, as he faces many challenges such as titans without showing fear, demonstrating bravery. Piper, the daughter of love, is another hero in this book. At one point her quest-mates have been frozen, and she has to think quickly. she manages to awake the metal dragon with her sheer will and charm, saving her friends and melting the ice goddess that trapped them. This demonstrates heroic qualities like charm, wit, and being independent. Then there is Leo, repair boy exrodinaire. He gets stranded on an island, and eventually falls in love with Calypso, a girl who is trapped on the island for eternity. When his chance comes to leave, he has to decide whether to stay with Calypso or continue on the save the world. He chooses to save the world, but promises to find a way to free Calypso. This shows two vital hero qualities; the ability to sacrifice and a kind heart. Overall, with so many heroes in this novel I don't see how it couldn't be a hero story! :D -Zoe dos (walsh)

House of Hades is an amazing book by Rick Riordan. It has 7 main characters all of them heros but I think the one hero none of his friends could finish the quest, to sto Gea from rising and saving humanity, without is Percy Jackson. Even though Percy is only 16 he has already saved the world once making him an obvious hero. Also he returned pride to the 12th legion. Finally when his girlfriend Annabeth gets pulled to the ledge of a pit that falls directly to Tartarus he dives to try and save her but can't and gets pulled in with her. He and Annabeth struggle through Tartarus together to find the doors of death. and return to the mortal world. Although the task is nearly impossible he and Annabeth work their way to the doors of death seeing titans the had killed before. Also some of the monsters only wanted to return to the mortal world to get revenge on them. Hearing this scared them but with their strength of friendship to their friends it drives them to keep moving and they finally meet their friends at the doors of death and neither Percy or Annabeth could of survived Tartarus without each other. So Percy risked his life to save his girlfriend and was a hero that his friends couldn't survive without.

Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix, by J.K. Rowling, is about (as you probably guessed) a 13 year old boy named Harry Potter, who is trying to reveal to the world that Lord Voldemort has returned and is jeopardizing the wizarding world. Harry is a hero in many ways, and for many people. First, he and his cousin (whom he hates) are attacked by dementors who want to consume their souls. Harry, in risk of being expelled from school and losing his wand forever, bravely fights off the dementors and saves his cousin’s life. This demonstrates heroism by acting bravely in the face of danger, and doing it not only in an act of selfish-ness. Next, Harry stands up to a government-imposed teacher named Professor Umbridge. She is trying to take over the school and obliterate all useful magic the students have ever learned. For this, he is forced to right lines using his own blood as ink. This does not stop him, and Harry continues to regularly spread truth throughout the wizarding world, despite being denied as a fraud by the Ministry of Magic and virtually the rest of the world. In the end, however truth is finally revealed and Harry is revered as a hero (which he rightfully deserves) by everyone who knows him. Harry Potter is truly a hero. - Jimmy

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief written by Rick Riordan has many heroes. The main hero of the book is Percy Jackson. At first he is seems to be an unlikely hero. Although this is true he becomes a heroic figure in the book. Percy like other heroes has weaknesses. His happens to be dyslexia an ADHD. Toward the middle of the book he learns to use his weaknesses as a strategy and makes many heroic moves. One of these is when he kills the minotaur to save his Mom and Grover(a satyr) while putting himself in danger. He not only does this, but constantly does exemplary things such as freeing wild animals although it will not help him in any way and is not part of his quest.Percy puts his life before others, does good deeds, and learns to use his weakness for himself and others.Percy Jackson is a true hero.

The Last Apprentice, Curse of the Bain by Harper Collins is about a hero, but not seen as a hero by all. In the beginning you know that the main character Thomas Ward is the hero of the story, but he is also the Spook's apprentice; the Spook is the banisher of evil spirits, witches, and anything else of that matter, and because they deal with "the dark side" people see them as evil to. what the people don't know is that the Spooks save them from being killed, possessed, or something a lot worse. So Thomas was looked at as a witch not a hero. As it turns out he ends up saving Priest Town from an ancient Beast called the Bain. In fact he sacrificed himself in order to save the Spook and Priest Town. yeah, he died, but thankfully by some miracle he came back from the dead. yet another trait of a hero, coming back from the dead when all seems lost. The real reason Thomas is a hero is because he continually does the right action even if everyone is telling him not to, like when the Spook told him not to follow him inside the Bain's lair, but of course you know that he does, and in the end saves the day.

House of Hades, by Rick Riordan, contains more than one hero. The eight main characters,(some might argue there are seven, but I think there are eight) are on a demigod quest to close the Doors of Death. The Doors of Death are conveniently located inside the House of Hades. Six of the main characters are on a magical flying warship called the Argo II, sailing/flying across the Mediterranean Sea to Greece where the House of Hades is located. The other two heroes are in Tartarus, trying to make it to the Doors of Deaths without dying. This little quest to close the Doors of Death is all just part of the big quest. The quest to prevent Gaea, the evil Mother Earth, from rising and destroying the world. Throughout this series, all the main characters have had to show strength, intelligence, and loyalty. That is how they have all stayed alive, and will stay alive.

Aria, from Under the Never Sky, is a girl far in the future who is living in world that isn't real. Living inside artificial walls that block out the cruelties of a world in chaos and a thousand ways to die. So, hiding behind safe walls, Aria doesn't seem like much of a hero. Not until she is cast out of her home and forced to survive in a place supposedly unsurvivable. In the beginning of her journey, she seems selfish and ignorant, but as the story grows, so does Aria. She starts to become unselfish and caring of others. SHe's become willing to make sacrifices for the benefit of another. That's what makes a true hero in my opinion. Aria is a hero.

Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year old girl who fights to live and support her family every day by hunting (against the law) & trading her catch with fellow law breakers. one thing every family has in common is the Hunger Games the same event that will happen every year for the pleasure of the capitol. The Hunger Games is the event that determines life or death for everyone between the ages of 12-17. The 24 tributes, a boy and a girl from ech of the twelve districts, will fight to the death in an arena that has a deadly surprise for the viewers enjoyment. Katniss is determined to volunteer when her sister is reaped to particpate and she doesnt want her sister nto suffer that. In the arena she faces love, death, determination, hope, and rebellion. There she "falls" for the boy from her district, Peeta, in an effort to survive and in that state deetermines it was not luck that put her in that position of suffering, it was the capitol. In her last efforts to save herself and peeta she has the most rebellious act that begins the downfall of the capitol. Wonderstruck, by Brian Selznick, is about two different stories, one set in 1927 and one set in 1977, about two very unlikely heroes who each go on a quest to find where they belong. The main characters, Rose in 1927 and Ben in 1977, are both deaf and feel out of place in their world. This causes both of them to run away to New York City. Rose is running away to avoid a family that treats her like an outcast and to find a mysterious actress that she chronicles in her scrapbook. Ben, however, is traveling to NYC to find his long lost father. While in New York, they both decide to go to the Museum of Natural History because of a book they found called Wonderstruck, that captures their imaginations and hearts. At the museum, they both start to discover the concept of self-worth and belonging. This is a beautiful book that proves that anyone can be a hero.- Olivia Requist

My book The Graveyard Book meets the requirement of a book about a hero because the main character Nobody Owens displays all characteristics and qualities of a hero. A hero must display bravery in their act. Nobody Owens, the kid who was raised in a graveyard, stood up to the two biggest bullies in his school after they were taking little kid’s money and vandalizing the school library. A hero must also be encouraging and giving. In the book, Nobody took his most valuable treasures and pawned them for a headstone for his best friend who no one ever cared about enough to get her a headstone. Nobody Owens was a generous boy who thought of others in front of himself and always did good deeds for even his dead friends of the graveyard.
