Adventure Novel: Exposition (Beginning Situation)

We have studied about common archetypes of the hero's journey.  Another common situation archetype in literature involves the "task" archetype, which refers to a superhuman feat that must be accomplished in order to fulfill the ultimate goal. Describe the setting and the main character (the protagonist) in your "adventure" novel.  Explain how the setting contributes to the "task" archetype.  Also, predict what "task" the protagonist must complete to reach his/her ultimate goal.  If it has already been revealed what the protagonist's "task" is, explain what superhuman lengths he/she has to face in order to succeed in reaching his/her goal. (Be sure to introduce your blog with title and author. Use evidence from the novel to support your response.)

I am reading The Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare. This book is about Clary Fray, a fifteen-year-old girl. She is partying at a club called 'Pandemonium' when she sees a blue-haired boy walk into a back room. She follows the blue-haired boy, a women in an elegant dress, and two men in black into the back room, leaving her friend Simon in the club. She is confused when the group is astonished that she can see them. The name of the woman is Isabelle. The two men in black are Alec and Jace. They tell Clary that the blue-haired boy is a demon, and that they are demon-hunters. Most people cannot see the demon-hunters. The demon-hunters must kill the demon, and when they do, the demon's body shrinks and dissolves into nothing. Then, Simon comes in and asks why she is in the room by herself. This takes place in New York City. In the book, she describes how the streets of Manhattan wind around downtown. I think that Clary's "task" will be to become a demon-hunter and work with Isabelle, Jace, and Alec to rid the world of the demons. I think this because in the book, Simon asks why she is alone, so Clary must be meant to be a demon-hunter if she can see them. She will complete this task to make the world a safer place.

In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling, the main character, Harry Potter discovers he is a wizard. He learns that because of him, Voldermort, one of the most powerful dark wizards disappeared. Since he learned he was a wizard, he was sent to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The school is run by the one wizard Voldermort fears, Dumbledore. As Harry continues to go to school at Hogwarts, he finds that the school is hiding something that has some relation to Nicholas Flamel, Dumbledore’s partner. Some of the teachers at Hogwarts had been acting strangely and Harry was catching on to their tricks. I believe that in this book, it will be Harry Potter’s task to figure out what is being hidden and save it from getting into the wrong hands.

The novel Variant, by Robinson Wells, follows the story a 16 year old boy named Benson. Benson has lived his whole life as an independent foster kid, until he found a private school that he could escape to. The problem is that this modern day school is another place he can’t escape. The old building is surrounded by a tall fence and there are cameras everywhere. There are no adults to help, because the school is run by kids on the inside. On the day of his arrival, Benson knows he must escape the prison school with other students to report to the world about it. When he had asked others about past escape attempts he realized that, “No one could make it out of this place alive.” To escape the school in the end Benson must use great numbers of students to climb over the wall. On the other side of the wall, a fight breaks out which leaves Benson and his friend, Becky, as the only survivors. Benson must be brave and carry his wounded friend to safety in a small farm village. Even though, only two survived escaping the twisted school, Benson should be rewarded for his brave, strong, and heroic actions.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, by J.K. Rowling, is about the protagonist Harry Potter and his quest to save his friend in an underground lair called the chamber of secrets. The action starts when a cat and three students have been mysteriously petrified, including Harry's friend Hermione. However, while she is in the hospital, Harry visits her and discovers a piece of paper with a description of a Basilisk, a type of monster, in her hand. They then deduce that a Basilisk must be down in the chamber of secrets and decide to try to find the chamber. Their first clue is a diary found in the girls' bathroom that Harry starts writing in because it responds back. Though this writing, Harry discovers meets Tom Riddle, who seems to have been a Hogwarts student. When a first year named Ginny Weasley disappears, Harry knows he must find the chamber and eventually does by sliding down a secret passage guarded by Moany Murtle, a Hogwarts ghost. Once in the chamber, he finds Ginny frozen and Tom Riddle. This is when he finds out that Tom Riddle is really just a younger version of Voldemort, the most evil wizard ever, who has been commanding Ginny through the diary. At this point, Harry summons Dumbledore's help and a phoenix and a magic hat arrive. Tom summons a Basilisk, but the phoenix stabs it in the eyes. The magic hat gives Harry a sword, which he uses to kill the Basilisk. He then uses a fang from the Basilisk to destroy the diary, killing Tom and waking Ginny up. In this book, it was Harry's task to kill the Basilisk and free Ginny, both of which he did quite succesfully.

In Allegiant, by Veronica Roth, one of the main characters, Tris Prior is given the responsibility of finding out what is happening "behind the fence." She becomes tough and rugged, contrasting to her petite appearance. Her previous life mysteries unfold before her eyes in multiple laboratories and offices. In this new unfamiliar place, she is told how her entire city was used as a experiment on human behavior and biological development. With this startling information she is faced with the task to help the government improve human DNA and find a way to enhance humanity in the nation.

My book, named The Lost Hero, is a story about a boy who suddenly loses all of his memory. He wakes up on a bus with people he has never seen before, and he doesn't even know his own name. It is written by Rick Riordan, and is a spin off of his other books called the Percy Jackson series. The setting is first on a bus, and then in the famous Camp Half-Blood. This setting has always been an interesting one for me because it is a place for kids who are half human and half Greek god. The setting goes along with the book because you soon find out that the main character is the son of a god. It is an interesting book and I am excited to see the ending!

Harry potter, J. K. Rowling is about a boy who is a wizard. With the help of his friends, he saves the wizard world from a villain who wants the sorcer's stone, which will make him immortal. Harry needs to over come many challenges to get to the stone before Voldemort, the evil wizard. The setting is in a castle, called Hogwarts. In Hogwarts, there is a secret room with a giant, 3 headed dog. Harry has to play a flute to put the dog to sleep. Then, he must catch a certain flying key to go into the next room. The last challenge is for Harry to play chess and go across the room. Harry potter is an adventure book, and has many traits that demonstrate that.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, by J.K. Rowling, is the last book in the Harry Potter series. In the book, Harry and his friends decide not to return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, instead choosing to search for some items that will help them destroy the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. These items, called Horcruxes, are created when one wizard kills another. At the time of the killing, it is possible for the killer to splice his soul. He can then attach the soul to some item close to him. While these Horcruxes survive, the wizard can never really die. Voldemort did this not once, but seven times. I believe that Harry's task will be to find and destroy all of the remaining Horcruxes, and then kill Voldemort himself, thus saving the wizarding world.

House of Hades by Rick Riordan follows the journey of seven demigods and their friends on their ship, the Argo II. Two, Percy and Annabeth, have fallen into Tartarus, which is a deep pit where the immortal monsters are sent once they have been "killed." Tartarus is a place of misery and is filled with dangerous creatures waiting to be let back out into the mortal world. The monsters are able to exit via the Doors of Death, and it is Percy and Annabeth's task to meet the other demigods and permanently shut the doors from both sides. Both groups of demigods, the ones stuck in Tartarus and the ones on the somewhat nicer part of the Earth, have challenges that they must face in order to reach the doors. Percy and Annabeth must first learn how to survive the treacherous pit by drinking from the Phlegethon, a river that is literally made of fire. Once that problem is solved, They continue to face more and more challenges, such as battling many, many, monsters, and gaining a couple allies on their way. The demigods on the Argo II, Leo, Piper, Hazel, Jason, Frank, and Nico, must follow Nico's directions to find their way to the House of Hades, where Hazel, a daughter of Pluto (or Hades, Pluto is his Roman name), must defeat a powerful sorceress using magic of her own. Before heading to the House of Hades, each of the other demigods face a test of their own. Leo gets sent to the island, Ogygia, and must find a way back to his ship, while Piper uses her charmspeak to activate the metal dragon, Festus, that serves as the figurehead of the Argo II, without their mechanic, Leo. Leo and Jason chase down a couple of troublesome monkey-ish dvarves, Kerkopes, in order to retrieve items that were stolen. They have them give back Leo's Archimedes sphere and Piper's knife, along with an astrolabe that once belonged to Odysseus, and the old book of an agricultural god, Triptolemus. After that, Frank, Hazel, and Nico head into Venice to return the book and seek the aid of Triptolemus. The god refuses to help children of Hades though, and turns Nico into a corn plant, while Hazel suffers from the toxic breath of the Kaptobleps, which they had encountered when coming into Venice. Frank notices that the god's magical chariot has been rendered useless due to a missing snake, and offers to replace it. To retrieve a snake, he must defeat the abundant Kaptobleps, and in doing so, he gains the blessing of his father, Mars (or Ares). The demigods go through many difficult tasks, and in the end they achieve their goal, and are successful, although somewhat beaten up...

The setting of my adventure novel, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, i about a French scientist, his manservant, and a Canadian whaler. the three of them are taken aboard a boat to kill a "monster"in the Pacific Ocean. The monster ends up being a submarine, and they are of course captured on said submarine. The goal has not yet become clear, however, I think that his (the scientist and friend's) task will be to escape from the sub.

(Please make my book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows if that is not what it is marked as)
In the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling, the boy named Harry Potter goes on a journey across England to find and kill Voldemort, the most malicious wizard to have every lived. When Harry was a baby, he survived the killing curse. He was the only person to have survived it. Also, Harry had a prophecy made in his name that stated that only one wizard can live while the other is alive. This is talking about Voldemort and Harry. I believe that Harry's task will be to find and destroy Voldemort and his soul that is split into 7. It is going to take Harry a lot of time and pain to kill Voldemort for good becuase he has created 7 horcrux, or spilt his soul into 7 so that once his current soul dies, he will remain alive, even if all the other 6 are destroyed, and Harry has to find and eradicate each of the horcruxes and then destroy Voldemort himself. He faces hunger and pain from his scar that Voldemort branded him with when he was an infant. Harry will face many stuggles in my story because he has to kill Voldemort and his soul split into 7.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling

In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the three main characters are Harry Potter, and his two friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Their task is to destroy seven Horcruxes, objects which contain parts of the villain's soul. The villain is a dark wizard known as Lord Voldemort. The story takes place in various parts of England, some of them fantastical, such as Godric's Hollow, and some real such as the Forest of Dean. At the beginning, the three friends are at Ron’s house because his brother is getting married, but as soon as the wedding is over, they flee to a different part of London. Throughout the story, Harry and his friends must disguise themselves, break into a underground vault, ride a dragon, make a deal with a goblin, and much, much more to destroy the Horcruxes. The three must hide in different forests to avoid Voldemort’s minions, the Death Eaters. With all but two Horcruxes destroyed, they make their way back to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where various friends are completing their final year. While he is there, Harry has one of his friends kill the next to last Horcrux, Nagini, Voldemort’s snake. Right before Harry tries to defeat Voldemort, he realizes that HE is the 7th Horcrux, and that he has to let Voldemort kill him. But it turns out that there is a twist in the story. When Voldemort tries to kill Harry, he fails, and instead kills that last part of his soul, the one that had been dwelling in Harry’s body since Voldemort first tried to kill him as an infant. In a happy ending, Voldemort is killed at last, and everyone in the wizarding world rejoices. Harry, Ron and Hermione are heroes.

In The Gray Wolf Throne, by Cinda William Chima, there are two main characters. One, Raisa ana' Marianna, the other Han Alister. Raisa met Han under the name Rebecca Morely, and they kinda started dating. What Han didn't know, was that Rebbeca was Raisa, and Raisa was the heir to the Gray Wolf Throne. When Raisa is kidnapped by Micah Bayar, so they can marry and put a wizard on the throne, Han is called home at the same time by the Demonai. On his way home, Han finds Raisa had escaped Micah, but was now being pursued assasins and was about to die. Han killed all the assasins, and found Raisa dying by a poisoned arrow to the back. Aftewr some High Magic which healed most of Raisa, but inflicted it into Han. After that, they were both near dead. Luckily, there was a Demonai patrol around and saw them, and brought them to Marisa Pines Camp. The healer there healed them both until they were healthy as can be. It was then when Raisa told Han her real identity. He was outraged and stopped talking to her. When Raisa father came to her, and told her that her mother had died, and she was now the rightful queen, it became obvious what she must do. She had to survive through her coronation, and convince her people that she will be a good queen. All the while, people send assasins at her, and set her up.

I am reading Allegiant by Veronica Roth. This novel follows the perspective of two teenage rebels, Tris and Four. In previous books they had escaped their city, Chicago, which is really an "experiment". They are just now introduced to the real world. This setting contributes to the task in a way that it makes the task even harder to surpass. The new world is disorienting and very critical of the people from the experiments. Foe example, GPs are Genetically Pure. In Chicago they were known as "Divergent". They face less challenges themselves, but often face the challenge of how to maintain friendship with GDs. Tris has this problem. GDs are Genetically Damaged. Four was thought to be Divergent, but it turns out he is just resilient. He is really a GD. it is hard to cope with... For all GDs. Both of the characters have a task that utilizes their very core. That makes it much greter a task to complete, but you know what they say; High risk, High reward.

The House of Hades supplied heaps of heroism. One that stands out in the amount of heroism he pulls behind him is Percy Jackson. He is thrown into Tartarous, a Greek place where monsters are reborn and a living heck. He fights though a poisonous world new dangers at ever turn: monsters who carry out curses, giants, and titans. Overall not a very excellent position to be in. Despite the fact he pulls his and his girlfriend's weight though the torturous land. The goal that Percy must complete to make it out alive is find the Door of Death, the entry way from the monster's world to ours. This seems impossible and first but he carries though and makes it out into the world just in time to save the day.

I read The Heroes of Olympus: House of Hades by Rick Riordan. In this book the main character is Percy Jackson. In the Previous book him and Annabeth fall into Tartarus, a huge pit in the under world where defeated monsters end up when slayed. They must escape and close the doors of death that are allowing evil monsters to leave Tartarus. As this happens you learn that all their friends are trying to reach the other doors and save them. Both groups face many challenges including poisonous air and giant mountain gods. The only reason that Percy and Annabeth can survive Tartarus is because they have each other. With Annabeths brains and Percy strength they manage to escape. But when they reach the doors of death they discover that someone must hold a button for 12 minutes for the doors to work. In the end their titan friend sacrafices himself for them to escape. I think that since its a book, and they always have happy endings, that both groups will get to the doors and everyone will be reunited.

My book is Life of Pi, a novel by Yann Martel. In this novel the main character is Piscine Patel, known as Pi. Pi's father owns a zoo and his zoo is shut down he must sell his animals. To take his animals to the buyer, he must load them onto a cargo ship for the long trip. When a huge storm arrives only one lifeboat survives. On that lifeboat are a zebra, hyena, orangutan, and a bengal tiger. I predict that his goal will be to survive and make it back to land or to be rescued so that he may tell his story to many. To achieve this goal he may have to go on extraordinary lengths especially because he is in the middle of the ocean with limited supplies.

In The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon, a 19 year old girl named Paige Mahoney has a superhuman ability: she can dislocate her spirit from her body. There are some other people like her who can also do things with their spirit like tell the future or control other spirits that have died. They do this by going into the "underworld" called the aether. When Paige goes into the body of a guard, she kills his spirit and kills him, too. The next morning, she finds herself in a jail, and tries to break out. The guards find her and shoot her with a poison dart and drug her. Then, for the second time in a day, she wakes up in a "concentration camp" that is specialized for people like her who can use their spirit. These people are called clairvoyants. She hates the camp and the people who run it, so she decides to try to break out, but finds that is is not that easy.
I think that Paige's "task" is to find a way out of the camp and get back to her home so that she can get back to her normal life. I think that if she could get home, she could see her father and the group of people she works with, called the "Seven Seals". If she could complete this task, she will be able to survive but if she fails to get out, she will die.

I am reading Ready Player One, by Ernest Cline. This Book is about a teen named Wade Watson who lives in 2045 when the world is turning to crap and almost everybody "lives" and works on the OASIS. The Oasis is a simulator system that has a low laser emitting device that projects the many plant universe of the oasis. Wades adventure starts when the creator of the system dies from an illness. With no heirs James Halliday creates a contest with three keys and three gates, A copper key, a jade key, and a crystal key all with their own gate. The contest gave the winner 242,000,000,000 dollars and ownership of the OASIS. Wade who got his OASIS free to go to school spends almost all of his free time searching for the copper key finally finds it after 5 years and becomes the first name on the scoreboard, an 80's style score board because that was the best time of his life. The contest centered around all 80's games is all of a sudden shot back in to popularity and Parzival,Wade's avatar, becomes famous and he makes lot's of money of little things like Parzival lunch boxes and other little objects. After he gets through the copper gate the Sixers formally known as Sux0rz to all gunters, the name of all the people who search for Halliday's egg, bribe Parzival to tell them how to get the egg, but when he doesn't they blow up his aunt's trailer in the stacks. Luckily Wade was in his hideout in the wall of trash on the outskirts of the trailer park. He then moves to Ohio and buys the highes quality OASIS rig you can buy. The setting of the book is in Utah at the beggining then in Ohio for the rest of the book. Also through all of the book Wade spends most of his time in the OASIS. I Think that Wade is going to win the contest but it may take 10 more years if it takes 5 years per key.

I am reading House of Hades by Rick Riordan. The main characters, Percy Jackson and Annabeth, are trapped in Tartarus. Percy is a teenage boy who is also the son of Poseidon. He is special because Poseidon was not allowed to have a kid for some reason. They were too powerful or something. Annabeth is also a teenager but she is the daughter of Athena. Athena was allowed to have kids but Annabeth is still special because she's awesome. Percy and Annabeth totally have a thing going on. I ship it. Anyway…. They don't have any food, water, or desperately needed medical assistance. They stumble through Tartarus and fend off many exciting dangers that await their every move. They must try to find the doors of death and escape Tartarus, and then go on to defeat Gaea. That is a pretty large task, but i think they can do it.

In the book Radiance, by Alyson Noel, the main character Riley died at the age of 12 years old and is now in the afterlife Here and Now. Her dog Buttercup is at her side around every twist and turn. Soon after crossing the “bridge” Riley discovers her “task” as a soul catcher on the earth plane. She meet s her mentor Bodhi, a nerdy teenager who has no sense of style. Riley’s first task is to convince the Radiant Boys, 3 ten year old ghosts who have been haunting an ancient castle (tourist destination) for the past hundreds of years. Many have tried over the past years but no one up until Riley has convinced the Radiant Boys to cross over the “bridge”. In a celebration of her success, Bodhi, Riley, and Buttercup fly to London, Riley’s dream travel destination as a child. In the afterlife Here and Now, she is able to manifest anything she desires, like clothing, how to fly, and many more objects. As Riley’s “task” as a soul catcher on the earth plane and her personality she encourages everyone in her path and reminds the ones who cross over, that death isn’t the end. Her sister Ever is the only one of their family, and with Riley being on the earth plane she is able to lift her spirit and send her on the right path in life.

In Spartan Gold by Clive Cussler, the protagonists Sam and Remy Fargo, two treasure hunting spouses, find a world war2 submarine in a swamp. Inside the submarine they find a bottle of wine from Napoleon's lost wine cellar, but the antagonist, a millionaire buy illegal trade, also wants this bottle, and he will kill for it. This was obvious when he sent one of his agents to find it, but the Fargos out smart this agent and as a result he was killed. The moment right before the man was killed the millionaire revealed a secret. It was that it wasn't the bottles he wanted it was were they lead to. So after reading that I knew that the Fargos task would be to find were the bottles lead. That is of course easier to say than to do.

The book Taken, by Erin Bowman, is about a boy who has many questions and NEEDS answers to. The main character, Gray, decides the only way to get answers is to climb “the wall.” Gray lives in a small town called Claysoot with only a couple hundred people. The founders of this place first discovered the mysterious heist as soon as they got there. Something happened and the people forgot almost everything from how they got there to what their names were. The heist takes away young men on the night they turn 18 years old. He has a brother, Blaine, who is supposedly a year older than him (to the day). Blaine got heisted exactly when it was expected. Weeks after Blaine’s heist, Gray discovers that his mom (who died when he was 14) and Blaine had been keeping a secret from him. He found out that he and Blaine are actually twins from a letter behind the picture in a picture frame. This is when the questions start. If Gray was Blaine’s twin then Gray wonders how he was able to escape the heist and what was behind “the wall.” The book states the wall is a structure no one can cross or survive and that climbing the wall is practically the most suicidal act someone could undertake. Gray decides “it is better to risk everything than to sit back and wait to be taken.” He decides to take on the wall, thinking that if he escaped the heist he could also escape the creatures that get anyone who tries to go over the wall. In his town there are many dead bodies taken away from the bottom of the wall, mainly of 17 year old boys before they reach the age of their heist. Gray successfully climbs over the wall, but is exposed to new challenges beyond the wall. Just over the wall he hears rustling from the bush beside him. His best friend Emma has decided to follow right behind him. Together they will have to find the answers and stay safe. I think at the end of this book they will get the answers they seek, but only after they succeed in challenges that could result in their death. Will the desire of these two young adults be enough to carry them through the toughest of challenges?

I am reading The Knight by Gene Wolfe. In this book a young boy travels into a lost world where there are seven different worlds. As he journeys he finds he has become a giant man who is asked by a goddess of a different world to become a knight. He is named Able by the goddess. He finds many companions and friends to help him travel to a different world to become a knight and fight crime. He begins his journey but gets sidetracked with obstacles of raiders and elfs. I think Able will become a knight and help the other worlds out of their path towards destruction.

I am reading the mark of Athena by Rick Rordan. Annabeth and Leo Valdez fly to camp Jupiter in search of Percy Jackson. they are brought to the cam by Jason. Jason is a camper from camp Jupiter. When the Argo 2 arrives at the camp they are boarded by the god of boundaries, Terminus. when Anabeth tries to reason with Terminus he gets angry but Jason intervenes. They are allowed to hover over the camp. I think that Anabths "task" is to unite the to camps to fight a greater evil.

I am reading the House of Hades by Rick Riordan. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase, the protagonists, have just been dragged into Tartarous, a place in the Underworld where monsters are reborn after getting killed. Tartarous is the most feared place in the world of demigods, yet Percy and Annabeth keep on fighting and struggling, even through the toughest challenges. They face titians, giants, vampire-like creatures, and even mosters that make you feel all the pain you have caused. The only reason they keep on going is because of firewater, help from a clueless titan, and eachother. They are trying to reach the Doors of Death to stop Gea's evil army of monsters from going the the surface the easy way. But someone has to hold the button for twelve minutes if they want to go back up. I predict that someone will hold the button for them and fend off all of the monsters so Percy and Annabeth can return to the surface. Then something will go horribly wrong and they will have to survive another extreme event. I think tbis because the author has a nasty habit of not letting demigods live a happy life.
